It's still a very good movie, particularly if you enjoy horror films, but I can see it being enjoyed the most by people unfamiliar with Jonestown. My distain for modern situation with Found Footage Horror is (no pun intended) well documented. This allows West the stylistic latitude to be more overtly expressive in his imagery. The end result of this means that we don't have a Found Footage Horror (which typically would be bad enough) but instead we are treated to a regularly-filmed movie, except that the camera is poor quality, constantly shakes, and actors constantly look straight into the lens, removing any suspension of disbelief you could possibly hope to garner from The Sacrament. The Sacrament was surprisingly good. At no moment in this first half, is there even a hint of horror. I’m a horror aficionado. It begins with the use of the old "found footage" device, which isn't just stale and inconsistent but also fails to make room for the beautiful, tense compositions that West employed in his earlier films.
